Devils Tower is a sheer rock that rises 867 feet above the landscape in northeastern Wyoming.  This geological formation is an important part of the folklore of Native Americans who know this sacred rock by ancient names like Bear’s Lodge and Bear’s House.

It’s interesting that bears commonly played a role in Native American folklore. One tale is about a group of native girls who where chased by giant bears. In this ancient tale the girls climbed a rock to escape the bears, then prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. The Great Spirit heard their prayers and made the rock rise toward the heavens. The bears tried to reach the girls by climbing it but could only leave deep claw marks on the sides of the rising rock.  When the rock and girls reached the sky they became the stars of the Pleiades.

Today we know this site as the name Devils Tower which came from a misinterpretation of the Native American name during an expedition back in 1875. Many people around the world are familiar with Devils Tower but not because of its folklore. In 1977 the popular movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind used Devils Tower as an important location for an alien visitation.

The importance of the site goes far beyond expeditions and commercial film. The site is designated as a United States National Monument, and is sacred to several Native American tribes including the Lakota, Cheyenne and Kiowa tribes.

A thousand years ago it must have been interesting growing up in that area as a young Native American. I can imagine listening to those ancient stories, while smoke from the camp fire swirled skyward against the backdrop of that sacred giant rock.
